How to Tell If You're Being Sold Something You Don't Need
Before I started Frost & Flame, I worked for a massive HVAC corporation. I wasn't trained as a technician; I was trained as a closer. Here are the exact tactics we were taught to use to turn a $200 repair into a $12,000 replacement.
The 'Carbon Monoxide Scare'
If a tech tells you your heat exchanger is cracked and you're at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, they must prove it. Ask to see the crack or the reading on their combustion analyzer. If they just shut your gas off and refuse to show you proof, get a second opinion immediately.
The 'Today Only' Price
HVAC equipment prices don't change overnight. If a salesman tells you a quote is only good if you sign right now, they are manipulating you. A reputable company will honor a quote for at least 30 days.
The 'Refrigerant is Illegal' Lie
While R-22 (Freon) is no longer manufactured, it is absolutely NOT illegal to own, operate, or repair a system that uses it. It is expensive to recharge, yes, but if a tech tells you the law requires you to replace the system, they are lying.
The 'Free Diagnostic' Trap
Companies that offer $0 or $19 service calls are losing money just to get in your door. They make that money back by finding something expensive to fix. Good diagnostics take time and skill. Expect to pay an honest fee for an honest diagnosis.
