Some Homes Need a 'C-Wire' Run Before a Smart Thermostat Will Work.
Smart thermostats need constant power to run their screens, Wi-Fi radios, and learning algorithms. Old mechanical thermostats didn't need this power, so most older homes don't have a "common wire" (C-wire) running to the thermostat location.
If you try to install a smart thermostat in a home without a C-wire, one of three things happens:
- It works for a while, then starts behaving erratically
- It drains its internal battery and dies
- It draws power from your HVAC system and damages the control board
We check for the C-wire situation FIRST during our estimate. If you need one, we run it cleanly. If you don't need one (newer homes usually have it), we move forward with the install.
