Your Air Filter Probably Isn't Doing What You Think It's Doing
Most homeowners think the air filter is there to clean the air they breathe. It's not. The standard 1-inch fiberglass filter exists for one reason only: to protect the HVAC equipment from large debris like hair and heavy dust.
The MERV Rating Trap
When people realize cheap filters don't improve air quality, they often go to the hardware store and buy the highest MERV rating they can find (like a MERV 13 or 14). This is a mistake.
A standard HVAC system is designed for a specific amount of airflow. High-MERV 1-inch filters are so dense that they act like a wall. The blower motor has to work twice as hard to pull air through them, which increases your power bill, overheats the motor, and can actually cause the AC coil to freeze.
The Right Way to Filter Air
If you want to actually improve indoor air quality without destroying your HVAC system, you need a Media Air Cleaner. This is a much thicker filter (usually 4 to 5 inches thick) that gets installed directly into the ductwork.
Because it's so thick, it has a massive surface area. It can capture microscopic particles (MERV 13+) without restricting airflow. Plus, instead of changing it every 30 days, a media filter only needs to be replaced every 6 to 12 months.
