Furnace Making a Strange Noise? Here's What Each Sound Actually Means
Your furnace shouldn't sound like a percussion section. If you're hearing new noises, your system is trying to tell you something. Here is the translation.
Loud Banging When It Turns On
This is often 'delayed ignition.' Gas builds up in the combustion chamber before the igniter finally lights it, causing a small explosion. This is dangerous and can crack your heat exchanger. Turn the system off and call a pro immediately.
High-Pitched Screeching
Usually a failing blower motor bearing or a loose/damaged fan belt. It's an annoying sound, but it's usually a relatively straightforward repair if caught before the motor seizes completely.
Rattling or Vibrating
Often this is simply a loose panel or a loose screw in the ductwork. However, if the rattling is coming from inside the furnace cabinet, it could be a cracked heat exchanger—a major safety hazard.
Rapid Clicking
If the furnace clicks rapidly but never blows warm air, the spark igniter is trying to light the gas but failing. This could be a bad igniter, a faulty flame sensor, or a gas supply issue.
When in doubt, don't ignore it. A weird noise today is usually a cheaper fix than a dead furnace tomorrow.
