The 15-Minute Spring HVAC Checklist Every Orange County Homeowner Should Do

The worst time to find out your AC is broken is on the first 100-degree day of the year. By doing a quick 15-minute check in the spring, you can catch issues before the peak-season rush begins.
The Outdoor Unit (Condenser)
- Clear the perimeter: Remove weeds, leaves, and debris within 2 feet of the unit.
- Check the fins: Look for bent or crushed aluminum fins. If more than 10% are flattened, airflow is restricted.
- Look for oil stains: A dark, oily stain on the refrigerant lines or the base of the unit is a dead giveaway for a refrigerant leak.
- Check the insulation: The thick black foam on the larger copper line should be intact, not dry-rotted or missing.
The Indoor Unit (Air Handler/Furnace)
- Change the filter: Start the season fresh. Write the date on the edge of the new filter.
- Check the drain line: Pour a cup of white vinegar down the condensate drain line to kill algae and prevent clogs.
- Listen to the blower: Turn the fan on at the thermostat. It should sound smooth, without rattling or grinding.
The Test Run
Turn the AC on a warm afternoon in March or April. Let it run for 15 minutes. The air coming out of the vents should feel significantly colder (about 15-20 degrees colder) than the air going into the return vent. If it's just blowing cool-ish air, you likely have a refrigerant leak that needs to be addressed before July.
